Soup Bowls in Bathsheba is the premier surf break in Barbados and one of the best waves in the Caribbean, a powerful right-hand reef break where waves hammer a rock shelf jutting into the open Atlantic. The wave handles sizes from 3 to 10 feet, producing deep, grinding barrels over coral reef roughly 50 metres long, with the best shape on NE-SE swells and westerly offshore winds at low to mid tide. Winter from November to May brings the most consistent overhead-plus swells, though surprisingly rideable waves occur even during the summer months of July to October. Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater has called Soup Bowls one of his top three waves globally, praising its curve that allows all sorts of manoeuvres and airs. Water temperatures average 27 degrees C year-round, so no wetsuit is needed. Early-to-mid morning sessions offer the cleanest winds and smallest crowds, though the spot attracts both local and visiting surfers whenever it is firing.
