The Boom

Playa Maderas is the most popular surf beach near San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, situated about 25 minutes north of town via a rocky dirt track through coastal jungle. The wave is a shapely A-frame beach break producing peeling rights and shorter, punchier lefts over a sandy bottom, working best on mid-to-high tide. Conditions are rideable nearly every day of the year, but the strongest and most consistent surf arrives during the wet season from May to October, when powerful S-SE swells push up from the deep Pacific. The spot suits a wide range of abilities — beginners enjoy the soft rolling waves on smaller days, while experienced surfers find steeper, more challenging faces during bigger swells. Early mornings offer the cleanest conditions before onshore winds and crowds arrive. The beach has a relaxed atmosphere with a few beachfront restaurants and is easily accessible by shuttle, taxi, or rental vehicle from San Juan del Sur.

Colorados is a powerful, barrel-prone beach break on Nicaragua's Pacific coast in the Chinandega region, widely considered one of the best beach breaks in Central America. A river mouth keeps the sandbars well-formed, producing consistent A-frame peaks that favor fast, hollow rights, with waves rarely dropping below 2 feet and regularly reaching 6-8 feet during the prime swell season from April through October on SSW to SW swells. What sets Colorados apart is its near-constant offshore wind created by the 'Lake Nicaragua effect,' which grooms the waves to perfection almost daily. The break handles everything from knee-high fun waves to heavy, double-overhead barrels that have drawn comparisons to Puerto Escondido on its biggest days. Access is via the beach road from nearby surf lodges, and while the wave is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, the lineup remains relatively uncrowded compared to spots of similar quality elsewhere.

Playa Santana is a fast, wedging beach break in Nicaragua's Popoyo region and possibly the most consistent surf spot in the entire country. The wave produces hollow, almond-shaped barrels on both lefts and rights across numerous peaks spread up and down the beach, working best from waist-high to a couple of feet overhead before starting to close out on bigger swells. It fires from mid-tide rising through mid-tide falling — roughly a six-hour window — and the May through December swell season delivers the most reliable conditions from south and southwest Pacific groundswells. The steep takeoff, fast lines, and wedging sections suit intermediate to advanced shortboarders, and the wave can deliver surprisingly perfect little tubes even on smaller days. Because peaks are spread along the beach, Santana offers a welcome escape from the more competitive lineups at nearby Popoyo's reef breaks.

The wave is remarkably consistent, working on virtually any swell direction, tide, and wind condition, with over 300 days of offshore winds per year keeping the faces clean. It handles sizes from 2 feet up to well overhead, with the barrels becoming particularly intense in the 4-to-8-foot range. Located steps from shore, Main Reef is accessible and straightforward to paddle out to, making it a favourite for solid intermediate-to-advanced shortboarders looking for regular tube time. The Popoyo area is still relatively uncrowded compared to Central America's more established surf destinations, though its growing reputation is bringing more surfers each season.
