Mareta is a sheltered beach break tucked into a south-facing bay right in the town of Sagres, sitting beneath the historic fortress headland and flanked by protective cliffs on both sides. The break produces left and right peaks over a sandy bottom, working best with south swells and northwest winds at mid tide — it catches wrapping west swells that other south-coast spots miss, making it a reliable fallback when the exposed west-facing beaches are too big. Waves are typically small to medium (up to 1.5 meters), making it ideal for beginners and lower-intermediates building confidence, though hidden rocks lurk at the far left and right edges of the beach. Watch out for weever fish buried in the sand, as the spot's frequent flat spells attract them in greater numbers than other Sagres breaks. Access is easy with free parking, restaurants on the beach, and the full amenities of Sagres town within walking distance.

Mareta

Supertubos is Europe's answer to Pipeline — a ferociously powerful beach break on the Peniche peninsula in central Portugal that produces heavy, hollow barrels detonating close to shore over a sandy bottom. Waves typically range from 6 to 12 feet, with better lefts than rights, and the spot works best on southwest swells combined with northeast offshore winds at mid-to-high tide. The nearby Nazare Canyon focuses and amplifies swell energy, sometimes doubling the offshore wave height on swells over 16 seconds, which gives Supertubos disproportionate power for a beach break. Peak season runs from September through November for the best balance of swell and conditions, though winter months bring the biggest and most punishing surf. The wave hosts WSL Championship Tour events and demands advanced to expert ability — the shallow sandbars, heavy lips, and strong currents make this one of the heaviest waves in Europe. Expect crowds when it is firing, as Supertubos draws surfers from across the continent.

Nazaré is the undisputed capital of big wave surfing, where the underwater Nazaré Canyon — Europe's largest submarine canyon — funnels and amplifies Atlantic swells to produce waves averaging 50-65 feet, with the world record standing at an astonishing 101.7 feet surfed by Rodrigo Koxa in 2017. The main break at Praia do Norte is a tow-in-only big wave spot that works on powerful northwest Atlantic storm swells between October and March, with November through February being peak season. This is exclusively for elite, professionally trained big wave surfers with jet-ski support and full safety teams — it is not a recreational surf spot. For spectators, the clifftop viewing area at the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo on the Sítio da Nazaré headland offers a stunning vantage point to witness some of the most awe-inspiring waves on Earth. Ribeira d'Ilhas is widely regarded as one of Europe's finest right-hand point breaks and is the crown jewel of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve. The wave peels over a rock bottom for up to 275 metres on clean west-northwest swells in the 4-to-6-foot range, though it is rideable from knee-high to double overhead and works at virtually all tides, with mid tide being optimal. Southeast winds are ideal for keeping the face groomed. The break's exceptional consistency and quality earned it a regular slot on the WSL Challenger Series schedule, so expect a high standard and sizeable crowd in the lineup. Access is straightforward via a path down the cliffs into the bay.

Ribeira d’Ilhas

Arrifana sits in a dramatic horseshoe-shaped bay on the Algarve's west coast, offering two distinct waves: a sandy-bottomed beach break with multiple shifting peaks on the inside, and a right-hand point break called Kangaroos at the northern end that peels over shallow rock for up to 200 metres on bigger days. The bay is a swell magnet, picking up west, northwest, and even south swells, with waves starting to work from around 2 feet and the point firing at 4 feet and above.
