Ballito is a collection of hollow beach breaks and occasional point breaks on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast, roughly 30 minutes north of Durban. Waves here tend to be bigger and more exposed than in the sheltered Durban beachfront area, with the best conditions arriving during the South African winter (May to September) when consistent southwest groundswells produce clean, glassy 3-to-6-foot surf. The sandy bottom shifts regularly, so wave quality depends heavily on sandbank formation — when they line up, expect fast, punchy peaks with hollow sections. The area is popular and developed, so crowds and parking can be an issue, and surfers should be mindful of occasional rocky patches and post-rainfall water quality.
