Jaco surfing

Jaco

Playa Hermosa is a World Surfing Reserve just 10 minutes south of Jaco, known for consistent, hollow waves breaking over a black-sand bottom. The beach produces powerful, punchy peaks with both lefts and rights, ranging from fun head-high wedges to heavy overhead barrels — though it tends to close out above 8 feet. Lower tides push the break further out with mushier walls ideal for longboards, while higher tides produce hollower inside sections with barrel opportunities. Best from May through November when south and southwest swells are most active, morning sessions offer the cleanest conditions before onshore winds arrive. This is strictly intermediate to advanced territory due to the power and speed of the waves — not suitable for beginners. The World Surfing Reserve designation it received in 2020 underscores its significance as one of Central America's premier beach breaks.
