Freights Bay is the longest left-hand wave in Barbados, a mellow reef-and-sand bottom break near Oistins on the south coast where southeast swells wrap around South Point to create consistent, user-friendly surf year-round. On smaller days the wave is perfect for longboarders and intermediates with gentle, rolling walls in about 4 feet of water, but when swells exceed 6 feet it transforms into a hollow, fast wave that rewards shortboarders. Peak season runs November through April with trade winds averaging 14-25 knots, and the break is just 10-15 minutes from the airport. There is no beach to speak of — surfers access the water via stairs onto a tiny strip of sand before paddling out. The area has been landscaped with benches for spectators, but bring your own supplies as there are no beach facilities.
