Rest Bay is the most popular surf beach in south-east Wales, located in Porthcawl on the Glamorgan coast and well-positioned to receive Atlantic swells funnelling up the Bristol Channel. It is a sandy beach break offering both lefts and rights that work through most tidal stages, though it can stop breaking on big spring high tides and is often best on the incoming tide. Southwest and west swells with east offshore winds produce the cleanest conditions, with the beach holding waves up to around 6 feet before quality deteriorates. The spot suits all ability levels, from beginners on smaller days to experienced surfers when overhead swells push through, and winter -- particularly February -- delivers the most consistent surf. Facilities are excellent, with the Rest Bay Watersports Centre, surf school, showers, car parking, and a cafe all right above the beach. It draws consistent crowds year-round given its accessibility from Cardiff, Bristol, and beyond.
