Mullaghmore Head is Ireland's premier big wave spot and one of the heaviest slabs in the world, producing monstrous left-hand barrels that detonate over a shallow rock ledge off the Mullaghmore headland in County Sligo. It only starts breaking at around 10 feet and can hold waves up to 50 feet and beyond, requiring massive west to northwest swells generated by deep Atlantic low-pressure systems. Southwest winds provide the ideal offshore hold. The wave is fast, thick, and incredibly powerful — a genuine life-or-death arena that demands tow-in equipment, safety jet skis, inflatable vests, and a highly experienced support crew. Only a handful of elite big wave surfers in the world tackle Mullaghmore. The big wave season runs from October to March, with January and February producing the most consistent XXL conditions. Water temperatures require a 5/4mm or thicker wetsuit with full hood, boots, and gloves.
