Kauai, Hawaii
Hanalei Bay is Kauai's premier winter surf destination, offering a long right-hand point break that peels for up to 300 yards over a lava reef bottom. Waves typically range from 3 to 10 feet and are best on north swells with south-southeast offshore winds, working well at low to mid tide. The wave features occasional barrel sections and finishes with an inside bowl section in the middle of the bay. Winter is the prime season, with January delivering the most consistent surf, while summer tends to be mostly flat. The paddle out is relatively straightforward through the deep-water channel, though the powerful reef break demands intermediate to advanced ability when the swell is solid.
