Popoyo, Nicaragua
Main Reef is the centrepiece of the Popoyo surf zone on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, a high-quality A-frame reef break that produces hollow barrels on both the left and right over a well-covered rock ledge. The wave is remarkably consistent, working on virtually any swell direction, tide, and wind condition, with over 300 days of offshore winds per year keeping the faces clean. It handles sizes from 2 feet up to well overhead, with the barrels becoming particularly intense in the 4-to-8-foot range. Located steps from shore, Main Reef is accessible and straightforward to paddle out to, making it a favourite for solid intermediate-to-advanced shortboarders looking for regular tube time. The Popoyo area is still relatively uncrowded compared to Central America's more established surf destinations, though its growing reputation is bringing more surfers each season.
