N'Gor Right is West Africa's most iconic wave, a punchy right-hander breaking over reef on the south side of N'Gor Island, just a few hundred metres offshore from Dakar. Made famous by the 1966 surf film The Endless Summer, the wave is incredibly consistent, picking up north and northwest swells that wrap around the island from October through April. It works at all stages of the tide and handles 2-10ft faces, though morning trade winds during winter can affect conditions so dawn patrols are essential. Access is by pirogue boat from the mainland. The reef is relatively forgiving but booties help on the sharp volcanic rock. Winter delivers reliable overhead surf with warm water and offshore conditions.
