Pipeline is the most famous wave in the world, a shallow reef break on Oahu's North Shore that produces flawless, thick-lipped barrels breaking in just a few feet of water over a sharp lava reef. The left (Pipeline) and right (Backdoor) both deliver world-class tubes off the same A-frame peak, with Pipe best on mid-to-long-period northwest swells (295-330 degrees) and Backdoor favoring shorter-period, more northerly energy (310-345 degrees). Prevailing east-northeast trade winds blow offshore here, keeping the faces clean for the majority of the winter season. The reef sits just 6-10 feet below the surface, creating incredibly hollow waves that detonate with violent force — wipeouts are punishing and the reef is unforgiving. Access is a straightforward paddle from Ehukai Beach Park, but the lineup is fiercely localized and extremely competitive for waves. The sweet spot is 6-10 foot Hawaiian scale, though it holds well into the 15-foot-plus range on the biggest winter swells. Peak season runs November through February, when consistent North Pacific groundswells deliver day after day of pristine barrels.
