Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Saquarema is Brazil's surfing capital, hosting the annual WSL Championship Tour event at Itauna beach, about 100km north of Rio de Janeiro. The main wave is a long left breaking over sand deposited by a lagoon channel, with hollow sections that can produce world-class barrels, especially at the Barrinha section which is a powerful, heavy wave on its day. A rock shelf on the east end captures sand flow and builds up exceptional banks. South and southeast swells light up from April through October, and the setup handles big surf better than most Rio-area breaks. North winds are offshore. Beginners can catch rollers on the inside while advanced surfers chase barrels at the point. Watch for the strong current near the lagoon channel mouth.
