Sunset Beach is the North Shore's great equalizer — a deep-water reef break with a dozen different faces that shift constantly depending on swell size, direction, and tide. The main peak produces powerful right-handers that run along a coral and sand bottom, with a slabby inside bowl section that can catch even experienced surfers off guard. Best on northwest swells with south-southeast offshore winds, Sunset needs at least 6 feet to start breaking properly and can hold waves well over 15 feet, when it becomes one of the most challenging paddle-in waves in the world. The wave has an extremely wide takeoff zone and strong currents that push surfers down the reef, making positioning a constant battle. The extensive coral formations near the surface present serious injury risks during wipeouts. Peak season runs from November through February, with January typically delivering the largest and most consistent swells.
