Tropical reef with long challenging rides in crystal clear water.

Taapuna is a powerful left-hand reef break located near Punaauia on Tahiti's west coast, about 12 km south of Papeete. The wave breaks over shallow coral reef and features three distinct sections that vary in intensity depending on the swell, with the outer section delivering the hollower, more critical barrels. It picks up south-southwest groundswells best, with wave faces typically ranging from 4 to 10 feet, and offshore winds from the northeast create the cleanest conditions. The break is popular with bodyboarders due to its steep, fast takeoff and throwing lip over razor-sharp fire coral, though stand-up surfers ride it regularly as well. Hazards include shallow reef, rip currents, fire coral, and sharks, making it suited to intermediate-advanced and expert surfers. The best season runs from autumn through winter, with March through October offering the most consistent swells.
