Ericeira surfing

Ericeira

Coxos is widely regarded as one of Portugal's best waves and a crown jewel of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve — a powerful right-hand point break that peels over rocky reef shelves, producing long, fast, hollow barrels when the swell angle is right. It handles northwest swells best and can hold waves up to 12-15 feet during winter, working optimally at low to mid tide. Entry and exit are notoriously tricky over sharp rocks and sea urchins, so reef booties and solid experience are essential — this is an advanced-to-expert-only wave. Located 1.5 km south of Ribeira d'Ilhas near the village of Ribamar, it draws top-level surfers from around the globe, so expect crowds when conditions align. Peak season runs from October through winter, with October often delivering the cleanest, most consistent swells.
