Surf Trip to Nosara, Costa Rica: Peaceful Vibes and Punchy Waves

Surf Trip to Nosara, Costa Rica: Peaceful Vibes and Punchy Waves

    Published on April 24, 2025

Flying into Liberia and the Bumpy Road to Nosara

We flew into Liberia Airport (LIR) — way more convenient than San José if you’re heading to the Nicoya Peninsula. After landing, we picked up a rental car and hit the road for the 2.5–3 hour drive south to Nosara.

Pro tip: make sure to rent an SUV with 4WD or at least a car with some clearance. The final stretch of road into Nosara is gravel, full of potholes, and super dusty depending on the season. You can get through in a small car, but it’s not the move — especially if you’re pulling in after dark.

    Surfing Playa Guiones

The main break in Nosara is Playa Guiones, and it’s got something for everyone. It’s a long, wide beach with multiple peaks — so even when it’s crowded (which it often is), you can still find space.

We had fun shoulder-high surf most days, with clean early mornings and light offshore winds. The wave’s forgiving but not boring — perfect for intermediate surfers trying to improve or advanced riders looking to cruise.

It works on all tides, but the mid to high tide sessions were our favorites — punchy enough for turns, mellow enough for longboard sessions.

The Nosara Vibe: Wellness, Nature, and Quiet Nights

Nosara isn’t your typical rowdy surf town — it’s peaceful, clean, and intentionally quiet. Everything closes early. Like 9 p.m. early. Which actually ends up being great when you’re getting up at dawn for a surf.

The town is filled with yoga studios, wellness retreats, and surf schools. It’s also a good spot for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, with multiple gyms offering drop-in classes. If you’re into health, mindfulness, or mobility training, you’ll be in heaven here.

Great for Solo Travelers and Families

What surprised us was how Nosara caters to both solo surf travelers and families equally well.

    • If you’re solo: there’s a solid digital nomad scene, tons of fitness classes to meet people, and mellow cafes to post up and chill.
    • If you’ve got a family: the town is safe, walkable, and relaxed. There are calm tide pools for kids, kid-friendly restaurants, and lots of short-term rentals designed for groups.

That said — Nosara is expensive. It’s probably the priciest surf town in Costa Rica, especially if you’re comparing it to spots like Dominical or Esterillos. But for what you get — clean beaches, great food, and consistent surf — it feels worth it.

    Quick Tips for Nosara First-Timers

    • Fly into Liberia — closer and smoother than San José
    • Rent a good car — 4WD or SUV highly recommended
    • Stay near Playa Guiones to walk to the surf (make sure you look at the airbnb map and choose close to the ocean)
    • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rashguard — lots of sun and long sessions
    • Book ahead — it gets busy, especially during high season
    • Expect early nights and high prices, but a super rewarding surf trip
