Oaxaca, Mexico
Barra de la Cruz is a world-class right-hand point break in Oaxaca, Mexico, about 30 minutes south of Huatulco, that gained international fame after hosting a WSL contest in 2006. When south or southeast swells hit, the wave produces long, fast, rippable walls with dredging barrels at the top of the point that transition into steep open faces wrapping hundreds of meters into the bay, with rides lasting 45 seconds or more. It handles waves from 2 to 10 feet, working best with northwest winds and low to mid tide, with the prime season running April through November during Mexico's rainy season. The lineup gets competitive when it's firing, and strong currents develop near the rocks on bigger days, so this is best suited for intermediate to advanced shortboarders. Amenities in the area are very basic — bring cash, food, and water, as the village infrastructure is minimal.
