Siargao, Philippines
Cloud 9 is Siargao Island's premier reef break, a thick, hollow right-hander that has earned a reputation as one of the best barrels in Southeast Asia. The wave pitches over a shallow coral and moss reef shelf, producing a heavy takeoff followed by a deep barrel section, working best on northeast swells with southwest offshore winds at rising high tide. Wave size ranges from chest-high to triple overhead, with November and December delivering the biggest and most consistent swells driven by Pacific typhoon activity. The reef is sharp and shallow at lower tides, so booties and a helmet are advisable, especially for less experienced surfers — the wave is intermediate-friendly at head-high but becomes an expert-only proposition when overhead. Access is straightforward from the iconic Cloud 9 boardwalk and tower, and the lineup draws an international crowd during peak season.
