Lofoten, Norway
Flakstad (also known as Skagsanden) is a wide, sandy beach break in the Lofoten Islands offering gentler waves than nearby Unstad, making it the go-to spot for beginners and intermediates in Arctic Norway. The break picks up northwest to westerly swells and produces both lefts and rights over a clean sandy bottom with virtually no hidden rocks, starting to work from as small as 1-2 feet. The best surf arrives between November and March, though summer sessions offer midnight sun surfing in mellower conditions — expect freezing water temperatures requiring a thick hooded wetsuit, gloves, and boots. Located right off the E10 highway, it is far more accessible than other Lofoten breaks, and Lofoten Beach Camp sits on the dunes offering lessons, gear rental, hot showers, and a post-surf sauna.
