Borestranden surf spot

Borestranden

Stavanger, Norway

BeginnerIntermediate

Wide sandy Norwegian beach with mellow, chilly waves.

Borestranden is a 3-kilometer stretch of golden sand and dune-backed beach break near Stavanger on Norway's southwest coast, offering the most accessible surfing in the region. Fun peaks with walling lefts and rights break along the beach, working best on medium-sized northwest swells with easterly offshore winds at low to mid tide. The wave gets hollow and punchy at head-high conditions but tends to close out above that. Best consistent surf arrives during winter, particularly December, when North Sea storms deliver reliable swells — though you will need a quality 5/4mm wetsuit and possibly boots, gloves, and a hood for the cold Scandinavian waters. The beach picks up slightly more swell than surrounding spots, making it a reliable option when other areas are flat. Strong undercurrents are the primary hazard and should not be underestimated. Despite its northern latitude, Borestranden has a growing surf community with local surf schools and the Boretunet surf center, making it a surprisingly welcoming introduction to the Norwegian surf scene.
