Oaxaca, Mexico
Puerto Escondido's Playa Zicatela is known as the Mexican Pipeline, a devastating beach break in Oaxaca that produces some of the heaviest, most powerful barrels in the world. During the peak swell season from May through September, south-southwest swells generate waves from 7 to 20 feet that break fast, hollow, and close to shore over a sandy bottom, with north-northeast offshore winds creating ideal barrel conditions. The wave is notorious for breaking boards and bodies — Zicatela demands expert ability and serious ocean awareness. Outside of peak season, from October through April, the surf mellows considerably and the town transforms into a welcoming destination for intermediate surfers, with smaller, more playful conditions. The broader area offers waves for all levels: La Punta serves up a fun, forgiving left point break, while Carrizalillo provides gentle waves for beginners in a sheltered cove. The town has a thriving surf culture with affordable accommodation, excellent Mexican cuisine, and a vibrant backpacker scene that makes extended stays easy.
