Chinandega, Nicaragua
The Boom is one of Nicaragua's heaviest waves — a world-class A-frame beach break in remote northern Chinandega that produces fast, hollow barrels breaking close to shore over a shallow sandbar, going both left and right. It doesn't need much swell to activate and works best at mid to high tides, with the prime season running May through October when South Pacific winter storms send consistent south swells up the coast and lower tides open up radical barrel sections. The steep, vertical takeoffs and raw power make this primarily an advanced surfers' wave, though intermediates can find manageable conditions during calmer periods. Located between the fishing villages of Aposentillo and Aserradores, about 45 minutes from the city of Chinandega, the area remains remote and uncrowded — a stark contrast to Nicaragua's busier southern breaks. A handful of surf resorts have sprung up nearby, but the overall infrastructure is minimal, adding to the raw, frontier-surfing appeal.
