Western Australia, Australia
The Box is an intense right-hand reef break in the Margaret River region of Western Australia, notorious for its thick, square-shaped barrels that lurch out of deep water and detonate onto a shallow, jagged reef shelf. Waves typically range from 3 to 15 feet, with the spot requiring a south to southwest swell direction and northeast-to-southeast winds to turn on properly. Mid-to-high tide is essential, as the reef is dangerously shallow at lower water levels, sometimes with only inches of water over exposed rock. Access is straightforward from the coast road, but the wave itself is strictly for advanced and professional surfers due to the critical takeoffs, heavy lips, and the very real risk of being driven into the reef. The Margaret River area also carries a well-documented shark presence, adding another layer of risk. March through May offers the most favourable combination of swell and winds, though quality sessions can be rare and fleeting.
