Victoria Bay

Western Cape, South Africa

Charming village with consistent manageable surf for all levels.

Victoria Bay is a premier right-hand point break tucked into a small, steep-sided cove on South Africa's Garden Route between George and Wilderness. The wave peels for around 200 metres over a bottom of small boulders and scattered lava rock, producing long, walling rides that are best in the 4-to-6-foot range on south swells with north-northwest offshore winds. It works most of the year thanks to the bay's orientation, with winter (June-August) offering the most consistent conditions. The takeoff zone is tight and the lineup can get congested despite the remote-feeling location, so patience and local awareness are important. Access is via a short drive down a steep road to the tiny beach village below, and the setting — surrounded by indigenous forest and dramatic cliffs — is one of the most scenic in the country.
