Tavarua surfing

Tavarua

Restaurants is a hollow, machine-like left-hand reef break directly in front of Tavarua Island Resort in Fiji, named because your friends can watch you get barreled while eating breakfast at the resort. Often called 'Cloudbreak's little brother,' it typically breaks at half the size of its famous neighbor but is considered by many to be the more fun wave — producing long, perfectly peeling lefts in the 2-6 foot range over sharp coral reef. It works best with solid southwest groundswell and ESE trade wind offshores, with the prime window running from February through October. Tide awareness is critical here: low tide exposes a briar patch of shallow coral that has caught many overconfident surfers off guard, so consulting the tide chart is essential. The wave is surfable at all tides depending on skill level, and when Cloudbreak is maxing out, Restaurants often lights up at a more manageable size with world-class form.
