Tavarua, Fiji
Namotu Left is a versatile, fun left-hander breaking over coral reef in Fiji's Mamanuca Islands, visible directly from the dining room of Namotu Island Resort. More forgiving than its world-famous neighbor Cloudbreak, the wave offers long walling lefts with occasional barrel sections, working well across a wide size range — from two to six feet it is a playground for shortboards, fish, longboards, and SUPs, while from six to fifteen feet it delivers thrilling, more powerful rides. The wave is side to offshore in the prevailing southeast trade winds, with the most consistent swells arriving during Fiji's southern winter from May through October on southwest groundswells. It also picks up occasional pulses from November to April when winds are lighter and more variable. Low to mid tide provides the best conditions, though outgoing tides can produce strong currents that require attention. Access is by boat from Namotu or Tavarua islands, and the wave's approachable nature makes it a favorite warm-up or alternative when Cloudbreak is too heavy for all but the most experienced surfers.
