Tavarua, Fiji
Cloudbreak is a world-class left reef break located a mile south of Tavarua Island in Fiji, consistently ranked among the most challenging and spectacular waves on earth. The wave breaks over shallow coral reef and is divided into three sections: the Point on the outside offers bigger, more rippable walls; the Middle delivers high-quality tube time; and the inside section called Shish Kababs speeds up into extraordinarily hollow barrels. Waves range from a playful 2 feet to a terrifying 20-plus feet, with optimal conditions on long-period south-southwest swells of 17 seconds or more during Fiji's winter from April through October. The break works across all tides but is best from low to mid, when currents are weakest. Access is exclusively by boat — a 5-to-10-minute ride from Namotu or Tavarua islands — and the wave demands significant experience, particularly when the swell pushes overhead. The shallow reef, powerful currents, and remote oceanic location make this a break where preparation and respect for the ocean are essential.
