Bali, Indonesia
Bingin is a short, intense left-hand reef break on Bali's Bukit Peninsula that produces picture-perfect barrels with mechanical consistency. The wave breaks over a shallow, sharp coral shelf and works best at 3 to 5 feet on southwest swells with east offshore winds, running for about 50 metres from a tight takeoff into a hollow, fast-pitching tube section. Mid to low tide is optimal for experienced surfers chasing barrels, though the reef becomes dangerously shallow at dead low — a section nicknamed 'stop signs' has scraped many a surfer. At higher tides the wave softens considerably, becoming accessible to intermediate longboarders and even local kids learning to surf. The dry season from April to October delivers the most reliable conditions. Access is via a steep staircase cut into the cliff face, and the small takeoff zone means the lineup fills up quickly, making early dawns the best bet for uncrowded sessions.
