San Diego, USA
Blacks Beach is San Diego's premier big-wave spot, renowned for its powerful hollow barrels breaking over a sand and rock bottom. A deep underwater canyon focuses swell energy directly toward shore, producing the largest and most consistent waves in the region, with faces regularly reaching double overhead and beyond during winter northwest swells. The ideal swell direction is west-northwest with offshore winds from the east, and the break works best at lower tides when the barrels are most defined. Access requires a steep, rugged trail descent down the cliffs, and the lineup is reserved for experienced surfers due to strong rip currents, rocky bottom hazards, and heavy hold-downs. In summer, south swells deliver long, rippable walls, offering a more mellow but still rewarding session.
