Steamer Lane surf spot

Steamer Lane

Santa Cruz, USA

IntermediateAdvanced

Crowded but iconic, multiple peaks and long right handers.

Steamer Lane is Santa Cruz's premier surf spot, a cold-water reef and point break system on West Cliff Drive that has been the heart of Northern California surf culture for decades. The break comprises four distinct sections — Indicators, Middle Peak, The Slot, and The Point — each offering different characteristics, from the 300-yard-long fast rides at Indicators to the thick, hollow wedging rights at The Slot that break mere inches from the cliff face. Waves are best on southwest ground swells at mid-tide on a rising cycle, typically ranging from 4-8 feet, with the northwest winds that prevail due to the bend of Monterey Bay blowing perfectly offshore. The rocky reef bottom produces powerful, well-shaped waves that hold size up to double overhead and beyond. The spot has a deep local crew and a well-established pecking order, so visiting surfers should show respect and be prepared for cold water in the low 50s°F year-round.
