La Nord surf spot

La Nord

Hossegor, France

Advanced

Hollow punishing waves for pros and thrill seekers.

La Nord is Hossegor's premier big wave beach break and one of the best sand-bottom barrels in the world, located on France's southwest Atlantic coast in the Landes region. When conditions align — west to northwest swells with easterly offshore winds at mid tide — heavy, hollow peaks detonate over shallow outside sandbars, producing fast, powerful tubes that can hold shape up to 6 meters and remain one of the few rideable spots along this coast when swell exceeds 3 meters. The wave is fast, temperamental, and demands expert-level ability; strong currents, closeouts, and constant sets on the head make it a serious workout even for France's best surfers. Peak season runs through winter, with December and January delivering consistent 2.5-meter-plus swells amplified by submarine canyons in the Bay of Biscay. The spot hosts the Rip Curl La Nord Challenge between November and April, a waiting-period big wave event. When La Nord is firing, expect a stacked lineup of elite European surfers — this is not a wave for the faint-hearted.
