Saint-Leu, France
Saint-Leu is Reunion Island's premier wave, a powerful left-hander that reels for 200-250 metres over sharp coral reef in the Indian Ocean. The wave has two main sections: a steep takeoff bowl and a second, more tubular inside section that offers deep barrel opportunities on smaller swells. It picks up consistent Roaring Forties groundswells that wrap around South Africa, with the best and most consistent surf arriving from May through October during the austral winter. Low tide exposes dangerous coral heads, making high tide the safest and most surfable window. Surfers should be aware that Reunion experienced significant shark activity between 2011-2019, primarily from bull and tiger sharks. Strict safety protocols now exist including the Shark Lookout Program, SMART drumlines, underwater patrols, and surfers commonly wear electronic shark deterrents. Water temps range from 23-25C in winter to 26-29C in summer, so boardshorts work year-round.
