Mentawai, Indonesia
Lance's Right, also known as Hollow Trees or HT's, is one of the most photogenic and consistent right-hand barrels in the Mentawai Islands, breaking with mechanical precision over a shallow coral reef off the southern coast of Sipora. The wave handles southwest to west swells from 4 to 10 feet and is best surfed at mid to high tide with light southeast to east winds, which are standard during the prime April-to-October dry season. A swell-refraction phenomenon wraps energy 180 degrees around the island, giving the spot remarkable consistency even though it does not face the open Indian Ocean directly. The inside section known as the Surgeon's Table is a dangerously shallow slab of reef that has earned its name, so experience and caution are non-negotiable. Access is by boat only, either from surf charter vessels or the handful of land camps on the island.
