Mentawai Islands, Indonesia
Macaronis is widely regarded as one of the most perfect and consistent left-hand reef breaks on the planet, peeling mechanically over a relatively forgiving section of reef in the southern Mentawai Islands. It handles all tides and a wide swell window, but fires best on southwest groundswells in the 3-6 foot range with northeast offshore winds. The wave offers a steep, bowling takeoff into a long, rippable wall with multiple barrel sections that allow confident tube riders to get shacked repeatedly on a single wave. Unlike many Mentawai waves, the reef here is less threatening, making it more approachable for solid intermediates. Access is by boat only — either from a surf charter or the Macaronis Resort on the adjacent island. The prime season runs April through October when consistent Indian Ocean swells march through.
