Mavericks

Half Moon Bay, USA

Advanced

Legendary California break known for massive, jaw-dropping waves.

Mavericks is one of the world's most fearsome big-wave breaks, located half a mile offshore from Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay, California, where an underwater rock ramp focuses North Pacific storm swells into towering walls that routinely exceed 25 feet and can top 60 feet on the biggest days. The right is the primary ride, offering a fast, powerful drop and a long wall, while the left is a rarely surfed short-lived explosion of speed and spit. The wave breaks over a jagged boulder-lined reef in cold, shark-inhabited waters with powerful currents, and is strictly the domain of elite big-wave surfers with the fitness, experience, and water-safety support to handle wipeouts in deadly conditions. The season runs from November through March, driven by powerful storms tracking across the North Pacific. Mavericks has hosted invitational big-wave contests and is considered the premier heavy-water spot on the US West Coast.
