Acajutla, El Salvador
Mizata is one of El Salvador's most consistent and least crowded surf spots, located about an hour west of La Libertad along a half-mile of black-sand beach with four distinct breaks. The main attraction is The Point, a right-hand point break with an intense takeoff and fast walls that works best on the last hours of dropping tide through the first hours of rising tide, breaking in front of a river mouth. Additional breaks include Tweeners (a reef break best chest-high to overhead at higher tide), a sandy-bottom beach break, and The Slab, which produces world-class waves at high tide on big swells. All breaks favor south-southwest swell and the spot picks up more swell than neighboring areas — when Punta Roca and El Tunco go flat, Mizata often still has waves. It becomes unrideable above 8-10 feet due to strong currents, but on most days it accommodates all skill levels across its varied breaks.
