Golfito , Costa Rica
Pavones is legendary as one of the longest left-hand waves on Earth, located in a remote jungle setting near Golfito in southern Costa Rica. When double-overhead southwest swells arrive, the wave can break for 600-700 meters, producing two-minute rides that start with semi-bowly carving sections, speed up into super-hollow barrels near the rivermouth, then taper perfectly into the bay. It requires south to southwest swell to work, ideally 5-8 feet with long periods over 12 seconds and east offshore winds, with the prime season running May through October — July being the most consistent month. The remoteness keeps it less accessible than other Costa Rica spots, but when it turns on, expect 100-plus surfers in the lineup as word travels fast. The rocky bottom demands respect, and the wave rewards experienced surfers who can handle long, sectioning rides with changing speeds and power.
