Santa Cruz, Costa Rica
Playa Negra is one of Costa Rica's premier right-hand reef breaks, located in the Guanacaste province near Santa Cruz along the Pacific coast. The wave breaks over a rock reef bottom and produces fast, hollow barrels on lower tides and bigger swells, while offering a more forgiving, well-shaped wall at higher tides and smaller sizes. It handles west-northwest swells best, with offshore winds from the east, and can hold waves from head-high up to nearly triple overhead without closing out, thanks to a well-defined channel for easy paddle-outs. The spot picks up both northern and southern hemisphere swells, making it reasonably consistent year-round with winter being the prime season. Watch out for sea urchins, rocks, and a relatively small takeoff zone that creates a tight lineup. It draws crowds easily due to its quality, so arriving early is advisable, especially during peak season.
