La Libertad, El Salvador
Punta Roca is the crown jewel of El Salvador and the most famous right-hand point break in Central America, located three miles east of the fishing town of La Libertad. This cobblestone-bottom freight train peels for 100 to 300 yards along a rocky shoreline, sculpting a variety of steep walls and barrel sections throughout its half-mile journey at its best. Optimal conditions come on south to southwest swells with north-northeast offshore winds, producing head-to-double-overhead waves in the 5-to-12-foot range, with the season peaking from April through October. The wave offers enough variety in its sections to accommodate intermediate through expert surfers, though the shallow volcanic boulders, strong currents, and a hazard known as Mama Roca demand respect and awareness. An easier inside section called La Paz provides a softer introduction to the break. The lineup attracts a dedicated local crew and visiting surfers from around the world — paddle fitness and solid wave knowledge are essential to make the most of this exceptional point break.
