Bordeaux, France
Lacanau-Océan is a powerful, often hollow beach break on France's Gironde coast, about an hour west of Bordeaux, and a regular stop on the European professional surf circuit. The long stretch of sandy beach, aided by well-placed groynes, produces quality lefts and rights that range from 1 to 10 feet and can barrel hard on the right sandbars. Best swell direction is from the west, with offshore winds from the east, and the break works through all tides. Autumn delivers the most consistent clean conditions, particularly October, when Atlantic groundswells combine with lighter winds. Currents can be strong and the waves surprisingly powerful for a beach break, so intermediate ability is recommended on bigger days. The town has a deep surf culture with plenty of shops, schools, and accommodation, making it an excellent base for a French surf trip.
