Sopelana surf spot

Sopelana

Bilbao, Spain

BeginnerIntermediateAdvanced

Fast hollow peaks for skilled surfers willing to brave the cold.

Sopelana features two 800-metre beach fronts exposed to consistent Atlantic swell just 20 minutes from Bilbao, offering a mix of sand-bottom peaks and fingers of reef that produce both lefts and rights. The most famous section, La Triangular at La Salvaje beach, delivers excellent hollow waves, while other peaks along the beach suit all levels from beginner to advanced. Waves typically range from 3 to 8 feet, with the best surf arriving from October through March on northwest groundswell and southeast offshore winds. The western end holds a reliable high-tide peak, while the rest of the beach offers shifting sandbars with fast, long rides and occasional barrel sections. It can get crowded given its proximity to Bilbao, but the length of beach usually spreads surfers out.
