Zarautz

Iconic town with mellow waves for all skill levels and tapas.

Zarautz boasts a 2.5-kilometre sandy beach break in the heart of the Basque Country, making it one of the longest and most popular surf beaches in Spain. The exposed beach picks up consistent north-northwest Atlantic swells that produce a variety of left and right peaks across the bay, with sandbars forming on all tides thanks to the gently sloping seabed. Best conditions come with south offshore winds, and the prime season for quality waves is October through March, though summer offers smaller, mellower surf ideal for beginners. The long beach spreads crowds well, but it still gets busy given the town's strong surf culture and abundance of surf schools. Located just 20 minutes west of San Sebastian, Zarautz is easily accessible and offers a lively town atmosphere with excellent Basque cuisine right off the beach.
