Reef break with powerful, hollow lefts for skilled surfers.

El Quemao is a world-class left-hand reef break at the village of La Santa on Lanzarote's northwest coast, often called the Pipeline of the Canary Islands for its powerful, hollow barrels breaking over shallow volcanic lava reef. The wave comes alive on north groundswell with east-southeast offshore winds, producing perfect tubes from 6 feet up to a massive 20 feet when big winter swells hit between September and April. Mid to high tide is essential — surfing on a dropping tide is extremely dangerous as the lava reef becomes dangerously shallow. A shorter, hollower right also breaks on the other side of the peak, but the left is the main attraction. This is strictly an expert-level wave; even on smaller days the takeoff is steep and critical, and many experienced surfers opt to wear helmets given the razor-sharp reef below.
