Unawatuna surf spot

Unawatuna

Galle, Sri Lanka

BeginnerIntermediate

Warm gentle waves make a perfect longboard or beginner spot.

Unawatuna Bay sits just 5 kilometres from the historic fort city of Galle on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, offering a variety of breaks for different skill levels within a sheltered tropical bay. The outer reef delivers a powerful right-hand break for experienced surfers, while the inner bay provides mellow, forgiving waves ideal for beginners and longboarders, breaking over a mix of sand and reef. The best surf season runs from November to April, when consistent southwest Indian Ocean swells combine with offshore winds to groom the waves. Beginners do best at high tide in the bay's interior, while more advanced surfers time their sessions for lower tides at the point break outside. Access is easy — a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from Galle — and the bay's sheltered position means it rarely gets overhead, making it one of Sri Lanka's most approachable surf destinations.
