Ampara, Sri Lanka
Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's premier surf destination, offering world-class right-hand point breaks along the southeastern coast in the Ampara district. The main point delivers long, peeling rights with rides of 200 to 500 meters over a sand and reef bottom, producing carvable faces and occasional barrels in the 4-to-10-foot range on south-southwest swells. The wave features multiple sections, from a fast wall that demands speed to a mellower inside stretch suitable for beginners. Best surfed from April through October when the southwest monsoon delivers consistent offshore winds and warm 27-29°C water, with July to September offering peak conditions as sandbars fully form. The lineup can get crowded at Main Point, but a short tuk-tuk ride reveals quieter, isolated breaks nearby. No wetsuit needed here — just a board and a sense of adventure in one of Asia's most consistent surf zones.
