Shonan, Japan
Kugenuma is a black-sand beach break on the Shonan coast in Kanagawa Prefecture, about an hour southwest of Tokyo by train, making it one of Japan's most accessible urban surf spots. The beach produces mellow lefts and rights along shifting sandbars, with the eastern end sheltered by Enoshima Island offering gentler waves while the middle of the beach delivers typical beach break peaks. Conditions are generally forgiving up to head-high, making it popular with beginners and longboarders, though overhead typhoon swells in late summer can produce punchy barrels and beach-wide closeouts. The best surf arrives September through October when typhoon season swells combine with thinning crowds and warm water. Numerous surf schools line the beach, and access is easy via Kugenuma Kaigan Station on the Odakyu Line, just a short walk to the sand. Arrive early on weekends to beat the crowds and secure parking.
