Sunabe Seawall is the most iconic surf spot in Okinawa, featuring roughly ten distinct peaks breaking over a shallow live coral reef that draws comparisons to the setups fronting Ala Moana in Hawaii. The reef produces both lefts and rights, ranging from fun walls on smaller days to hollow, hard-breaking barrels when solid north swells arrive during winter, which is the prime season. Mid to high tide is essential for safe surfing, as the reef is dangerously shallow at low water, and surfers should be prepared for coral cuts and the occasional reef shark. East offshore winds provide the cleanest conditions. The spot caters primarily to intermediate and advanced surfers due to the shallow reef and powerful waves when the swell is up.
