Hossegor, France
La Graviere in Hossegor is widely regarded as one of the best and heaviest beach breaks in the world, producing thick, sand-bottom barrels that detonate just metres from shore. On solid W-NW swells, the shorebreak can reach 5 to 6 metres, delivering powerful, hollow pits with both lefts and rights that are strictly for experienced and expert surfers. The ideal conditions are a westerly swell with easterly offshore winds surfed around mid-to-incoming tide, and autumn — particularly October — offers the most consistent quality sessions. The underwater canyon offshore funnels swell energy toward the beach, amplifying wave power well beyond what the surrounding coastline receives. Hazards are serious: strong rip currents, extremely shallow water on the sandbar, board-breaking shorebreak, and dense crowds all demand caution and confidence. La Graviere has hosted WSL Championship Tour events and is a magnet for tube-riding specialists from around the globe.
