Reef break with long, hollow left-hand waves.

La Ocho, named for the eighth bus stop from downtown San Juan, is a quality reef break tucked inside Parque del Escambron on Puerto Rico's north coast, making it one of the most accessible surf spots for visitors flying into the capital. The main wave is a long, steep right-hander breaking over reef in the 3-to-7-foot range, best on north to northeast swells with southerly winds, offering rides that are both longboard-friendly and occasionally hollow on cleaner days. A shorter but punchier left called Fiji breaks off the other side of the reef, adding variety to the lineup. Pop-up peaks spread across a wide area, with a small island reef providing partial protection from the prevailing trade winds. Best conditions arrive with clean swells at 14-second-plus periods, when the reef sculpts pitching 8-to-10-foot faces with sneaker sets that catch the unwary. The break gets crowded on weekends with a strong local crew, but respectful visitors are generally welcomed.
